Slagflower Songs is a new song cycle using poems by Sudbury writer Thomas Leduc. These poems are from his recent book Slagflower: Poems Unearthed From a Mining Town. The poems deal with the multi-generation effects of the unforgiving career and lifestyle of mining, from the long hours in darkness, the inherent dangers of the job, the union struggles and the pressures upon a family. On May 15, 2021, with the generous support of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, I will be presenting Slagflower Songs as a virtual concert. It will feature Marion Samuel-Stevens premiering the cycle and performing other pieces for voice that I have written including selections from River Flow and Tilt!. She will be accompanied by Irene Gregorio on piano. Bass clarintetist Tilly Kooyman will join for the piece from River Flow.
