On Thursday, August 26, 2021, at 8pm Eastern, with the generous support of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, I will be presenting Slagflower Songs as a virtual concert. It will feature Marion Samuel-Stevens premiering the cycle and performing other pieces for voice that I have written including selections from River Flow and Tilt!. She will be accompanied by Irene Gregorio on piano. Bass clarintetist Tilly Kooyman will join for the piece from River Flow.

Slagflower Songs is a new song cycle using poems by Sudbury writer Thomas Leduc. These poems are from his recent book Slagflower: Poems Unearthed From a Mining Town. The poems deal with the multi-generation effects of the unforgiving career and lifestyle of mining, from the long hours in darkness, the inherent dangers of the job, the union struggles and the pressures upon a family.
