Teaching Studio

COVID-19 Precautions
Please Note: As of January and February 2021 I am doing online only until the current lockdown is lifted.
I am doing both in-person and remote lessons at this time at the preference of the student. In-person lessons will be done with face masks and distancing.  Proper sanitation around the keyboards and other furniture will be provided as well.

My studio is a group of students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds; kindergarteners to retirees, and beginners to advanced.  All are here for the love of music. It is a positive and safe space for students to try new things, ask questions and explore each of their creative potentials.  We have numerous performance opportunities throughout the year from traditional recitals to playing in the mall and at seniors' residences.

PIANO
Lessons are wide-ranging from traditional conservatory examination prep to learning songs by ear. Many students find a comfortable combination of both methods to maximize their own learning potential.

THEORY
This is learning how music works; how the sounds are put together so that they make sense to our ears. It is an integral part of any musician's education. Unfortunately it has become thought of as a discipline separate from the playing of an instrument. These two things are actually inseparable. Theory is often taught alongside the instrumental lessons, but also may be taken as an individual lesson or in a group setting. The latter is often used for exam prep. I teach all levels of theory from rudiments through to harmony and counterpoint. I also teach Music History for conservatory exams.

COMPOSITION
Composing is creating something new with music. Many students feel the creative drive through the art of creation. When composing we focus on the structure of music, creating new ideas and how to think about what has been created. This often involves improvisation and writing the music down.  Everyone has a song that wants to be sung. For examples of my own compositions, please visit my composition page.
